Everyone is invited to a time of fellowship and community celebration of the Juneteenth holiday on Saturday, June 15, 12 noon until 5 pm, at the Nanci Weldon Gym, Lake Junaluska Retreat and Conference Center. Use the map below to find us!
Although President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, the news did not arrive in Galveston, Texas until June 19, 1865. Juneteenth is a celebration of the freedom granted to the last of the enslaved people. Later, the 13th Amendment ended chattel slavery in the United States; the 14th Amendment gave citizenship to all people born in the US; and the 15th Amendment granted voting rights to Black Americans. Juneteenth, the first federal holiday since the designation, in 1983, of Martin Luther King Day, was signed into law on June 17, 2021. We will have food trucks, music, games, and activities for children. Participating organizations include the NAACP, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Committee, and the Pigeon Community Multicultural Development Center. Join us for a time of fellowship and celebration! We need volunteers to help with set up at 10:30 a.m. and cleanup after 5 p.m. Please come help if you are able.
